Resources and useful links

There are so many great careers websites and resources available. This list is just a quick list of the most useful ones, that should help you get started in your career planning.

Prospects - is a great starting point. It has a huge number of job profiles. Their Career Planner quiz is great way to come up with some career ideas. Other sites that have career quizzes to have a go at (and they also have job information!), these including the NHS Careers Quiz and Future learn quiz. It is more commonly known for its range of free university short courses called MOOC’s. These are great tasters, in a huge range of subject areas. You may not get an ‘credits’ for doing these, but they will give you more insight into the subjects!

Other useful sites include the TargetJobs site and the National Careers Service (NCS). The NCS site also has a Skills Assessment that is worth trying too. If you are interested in university, you will probably have heard of UCAS by now. They don’t just list degree opportunities though. They also have careers information, job seeking advice and information about teacher training. There is also Career Companion , which is an ‘all age’ portal providing careers, learning and training information.

The following sites will help you look at opportunities, if you are interested in postgraduate opportunities then FindaMasters and FindaPhD are really useful, this one will help you find apprenticeship options. Are you interested in graduate STEM opportunities? Then Gradcracker should be a great starting point. There are plenty. A key issue and skill is being able to critically review the information and apply it to your situation - which is where discussing your thoughts with a careers adviser would help! These are just some of the sites available, you will find lots out there!

And finally, there are some great books out there that would also help. I’ve listed a few here.

What colour is your parachute? Has been around for a very long time, and updated several times. If there’s only one book you get, this must be it!

Career Journeys for young people: a parents and carers guide - I helped write this so, here’s a plug!

You’re Hired! Graduate Career Handbook - an interesting and useful read, aimed at those leaving or recently finished at university.
